Should Universities ‘Go Vegan’ to Help Tackle Climate Change?

University of Cambridge announced last week

This follows the news last month that 金斯密斯学院, University of London 是否也做出决定,将大学内出售的所有牛肉产品全部下架, due to the large quantity of methane that cows produce, contributing to carbon emissions.

Elsewhere in London, the University of Westminster University of East Anglia, Ulster University, and some colleges at the University of Oxford also all participate in meat-free Mondays.

Universities’ reasons for their switch to veganism

的 switch to veganism is becoming somewhat of a growing trend, promoted heavily by the media as a way to tackle climate change. Given the media attention,

It’s a worthwhile cause too.

Limiting students’ choice

Rachel Carrington from National Farming Union NFU in the UK told the BBC “令人失望的是大学采取了这种过于简单的方法”.

Supporting this, the UK’s NFU released a report

“We can deliver on our commitment to NET ZERO while retaining, if not growing, our agricultural capacity,“这说. This will reportedly happen in several ways, including improving farming’s productive efficiency, improving land management, changing land use to capture more carbon, and by boosting renewable energy 和 wider bioeconomy.

What else can universities do to help combat climate change?

Plastic bottle pick up

If veganism isn’t the answer, then what is? You can find out more about

Cutting down on plastic waste

菠菜网最稳定正规平台目前使用的塑料中,超过50%仍然是一次性使用的, despite many retailers putting measures in to reduce this. 塑料需要数百年甚至数千年才能分解, resulting in long-lasting damage to the environment.

It also contains toxic pollutants that damage the environment, causing pollution to the water, air and land.

In 2018, the University of Reading Sustain It initiative.

Investing in energy efficient buildings

Old buildings, 典型的是英国各地大学里20世纪60年代的建筑, can often have poor insulation, old outdated heating, poor ventilation and inefficient lighting. All of these release excess wasted energy.

Among other things, the University of Bath According to their 2019 sustainability report they have recently installed 2,为了监测能源使用情况,他们还投资了一种以天然气为动力的高效能源生产方式,使废热能够在现场“回收”.

Educating students

Many UK universities including Newcastle University, University of SussexUniversity of York

Encouraging public transport

What is the answer?

Climate change: what is he answer?

的re is no one answer to climate change, 重要的是要记住,大学能做的只有这么多.

通过做以上的事情,通过研究气候变化的原因和影响,以教育和告知, universities can have a monumental impact on saving our planet.
